Lesson 1-1-1 Variables and Stuff
Vocab:
variable- a letter or symbol that is used to represent a number or value. Variables can change.
example: 2n+ 3 The x is a variable.
constant- an value that never changes
example: 2 + x The 2 is a constant
numerical expression- an expression that only contains operations and/or operations
example: 2+3
algebraic expression- an numerical expression with variables in it.
example: 2n + 6
I will talk about these terms later. The first thing we want to do is to learn how to say and write down these problems. This will help us understand problems more. Here is an example of what we will be doing.
Example 1: Write two verbal expressions for 2x
If you didn't already know, if a number is RIGHT next to a variable, you multiply them. So what we need to do is write down this expression in words. This is how you do it.
2x can be, two times x or two multiplied by x
2 divided by 6 can be the quotient of 6 and 2
That's all!
